Views such as this are abundant in Meghalaya – home to sweeping landscapes, pristine sub-tropical forests, innumerable caves and breathtaking cascades. Captured one fine morning in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, also famous for the many endemic plants and orchids. Apparently, an approximate of 90% of the total population of Meghalaya use biomass as an important source of energy. Excessive use of firewood, as a primary source of energy for domestic purposes, is leading to severe deforestation in the northeastern Himalayan region. While spaces are being cleared for infrastructure and industry, the green cover is receding at an alarming rate.
