A lemon and chilli totem, believed to cast off the evil eye, hangs at a workshop in Kumartuli, the epicentre of all idol-making work for Durga Puja in Kolkata, India. This potters’ colony is characterised by a maze of dingy, winding, cobbled lanes and centuries-old houses. The idyllic locality is caught in a whir of activities in the months preceding Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Bengali populace across the world that usually takes place in October. For the few hundred artisans residing here, this is the busiest time, for it helps them keep their home fires burning for the rest of the year. They handcraft thousands of idols of Goddess Durga and her five divine children over a framework of bamboo and straw, their craftsmanship leaving onlookers in awe.
