What is a century-old forest

The one that has developed hundreds of years without human interventionEven though forests are all over 100 years old, centuries old are the ones that have evolved for hundreds of years without human intervention. Today, such forests are preserved mainly in the reserves, in the national parks and in the more inaccessible high mountain regions and water catchment areas of the Rhodopes, Stara Planina, Rila, Pirin, Strandja.

In fact, centuries-old forests are the last places of wilderness, where we can observe all the phases of the natural forests - the birth of the young forest among the remnants of fallen majestic trees, the struggle for the survival of water-rival mature trees and the slow dying of the oldest trees reaching the age limit without being cut off.

In the valley of the Koznitsa River, a service stream even nourishes these virgin forests.
The photo was taken near Ribaritsa, Bulgaria in 2018
