Forest is their home, forest provides them food. They collect fire wood for sale from forest as profession and by generations. Most of them are poor women and children. While men in the family are mostly landless agricultural labors, women and children are engaged in this to sustain livelihood. The job is very risky and barely legal but they have no other alternative for living. This photograph was taken at a forest of Purulia district of West Bengal while one of the lady was pierced with thorn in the bare foot and the other was helping her. They stopped for the moment beneath a large tree for rest a while. When I focused on them they considered me as Government staff recording their illegal act and the tension was prominent on their face.
